Bingo - the national game

National Bingo: Key Facts

• Bingo was revolutionised on 16 July 1985 by an amendment to the 1968 Gaming Act. The Gaming (Bingo) Act 1985 permitted games of multiple bingo to be played, where pre-selected numbers were `called` within the same time window in each of the participating clubs. Combined with high speed computer technology, this made the creation of `The National Bingo Game` possible.
• The National Bingo Game is the UK’s second largest computer controlled game, the national lottery being the largest.
• The National Bingo Game was first played in June 1986.
• Approximately 500 licensed bingo clubs link up every night of the year, except Christmas Day, to play.
• Approximately over £1 miillion a week in prize money is distributed by the National Bingo Game.
• Total prize money distributed to date by the National Bingo Game (as at 26 January 2004) is £768,000,000
• In 2000, £233 million was paid to the Exchequer in duty and VAT from licensed bingo operators.
• The bingo industry employs over 20,000 people from callers, and change givers to cleaners and accountants.
• There are 699 licensed and operating bingo clubs in Great Britain.
• For the year 2000 the total estimated market was around 89 million admissions.
• Over £50 million was paid out in prize money during 2001.
• Estimated total industry pre-tax profit for the year 2000 was £119 million.
• Over 3 million people regularly play bingo in licensed clubs.
• Players are often members of more than one club.
• Players often arrive 2 hours before the game starts, to enjoy a meal or chat with friends.
• More than two in three people go to bingo for social, rather than financial reasons.
• Many celebrities like to play bingo, including Denise Van Outen, Elle MacPherson, Atomic Kitten, Damon Hill, Bianca and Jade Jagger.
• The biggest win ever was on 22 December 2002, when Paula Young from Sheffield scooped £956,000.

Press Releases from The National Game site

30 January 2004
Bingo For Everyone!

RESEARCH SHOWS WIDENED APPEAL FOR BINGO

New research conducted by TRBI and commissioned by the National Bingo Game officially shows that bingo is widening its appeal across the age groups. Once seen as the preserve of pensioners, today’s most loyal Bingo players are more likely to be aged 25-34 and female.

Over 3 million people are classed as regular players of Bingo in the UK, being classified as playing twice per week or more. 8% of the population play Bingo, representing 10% of all women and 5% of men.

Respondent’s reasons for playing bingo have shifted with the age group. While previous research has shown the main motivator to be social, in today’s market of big money prizes and unbeatable odds it’s the chance to win that appeals to a broadening market.

With up to £200,000 a night up for grabs on the National Bingo Game, Bingo now offers serious money, and incredible odds. Previous research conducted by a Research Fellow at Cambridge University showed that Bingo delivered better odds of winning a million pounds than the Lotto, sports betting, football pools, and even Who Wants to be a Millionaire?! Plus, what other competitive activity can quote a 96% win rate among regular players?

Current bingo players show greater loyalty to Bingo than any other leisure activity, with 77% of those questioned saying they would miss Bingo the most, coming ahead of restaurants, the pub, or even a football match.

Steve Baldwin, Communications Manager for the National Bingo Game, commented “Bingo is unique in that it offers big money prizes, combined with a great night out for all ages. The average cost of a night out at bingo costs £20, including tickets, a meal and drinks. Which is great value. It’s no wonder that more and more people are getting switched on to bingo.

Our research showed 49% of non-players surveyed showed an interest in trying Bingo, so what are they waiting for? It’s a great night out and they could end the evening considerably richer!”

Research was commissioned by the National Bingo Game Association and conducted by research agency TRBI to investigate current attitudes towards the game. The qualitative research was conducted in July 2003 and looked at players and non-players attitudes to bingo. The research consisted of 966 face-to-face interviews conducted in-home. Locations were chosen from an even spread of towns and cities in the UK where bingo clubs are situated. Sample age groups were 18 – 65.

LUCKY OLD SOLES

Oldham was hailed as the Luckiest Town in Britain yesterday (tues) with SIX big Bingo wins -- in just FIVE days.

Players in the town's lone bingo hall called house to the tune of £398,000 over the last 12 months - more wins than anywhere else in the country. Amazingly all the huge payouts in Oldham, lancs., came over a five day period in January.

Gloucester came second, also with SIX wins at one club, with the winners picking up a cool £333,000 between them.

Washington, in Tyne and Wear, was third with FIVE wins at the one club, but the lucky players actually picked up £407,000.

The National Bingo Game Association (NBGA) calculated the figures solely on the number of winners over £10,000 and not the big cash sums involved.

NBGA spokesman Steve Baldwin said: ''We had 535 winners last year, each winning on average £75,000. 'The National Game is played 364 days a year and the prize fund is on average £100,000 a night.''

Lady Luck smiled on Oldham during the phenomenal five day period in January this year which included TWO £51,000 prizes on the SAME DAY - January 16th.

The other big wins were on the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th. The biggest payout was £102,000 on the 17th.

In the league of bingo-barmy towns and cities the unluckiest were Liverpool, Coventry, Hull, Preston and Gateshead with just a single win each.

Taking into account cash prizes London, Glasgow and Birmingham came top because they have the most clubs. Players in London landed a total of £1.72m, Glaswegian bingo fans collected £1.32m and in Birmingham players called house to the tune of £1.2m over the last 12 months.

Steve Baldwin added: ''The National Bingo Game pays out on average £1m in prize money each week. 'With research showing that 96% of regular players have had a win, there's a good chance of scooping some big money at Bingo!''

The full top ten towns were:
1. Oldham
2. Gloucester
3. Washington
4. Aberdeen
5. Dudley, West Mids.
6. Salford, Greater Manchester
7. Birmingham
8. Bradford, West Yorkshire
9. Bridlington, Yorkshire
10. Middlesbrough, Teeside.

BEST BET FOR BINGO THIS FRIDAY 13TH
Friday 13th may not be the unluckiest day in the calendar to win at Bingo, according to National Bingo Game statistics revealed today.

Ticket sales for Friday 13th December showed that more than 20,000 regular Bingo players suffer from pogonophobia – fear of the number 13!

Steve Baldwin of the National Bingo Game Association said, “Britain’s Bingo players should take advantage this Friday13th, it may just be their lucky day!”

This means that the odds of winning a massive £100,000 on the National Game could increase by 20,000 to 1, so why not throw caution to the wind this Friday 13th June, grab your dabber and head to your local Bingo club. You never know your luck!

And it’s not just Friday 13th that brings out the superstitious nature of Britain’s Bingo players. The National Game surveyed Bingo club managers to find out what are the other superstitions that Bingo players have in the UK: -

1. Lucky seat
2. Mascot
3. Only buying National Game tickets from the top or bottom of the pile
4. Requesting a lucky ticket touch
5. Lucky caller and lucky dabber and a lucky coloured dabber!

Other superstitions included a player who knew she would win if she saw four magpies at the same time and one respondent who knew her luck was in the minute her dog sneezed!

Blackpool bingo player’s £½ million shock win

A 75-year-old Blackpool widow had no sleep at all last night (Sunday) after scooping more than £500,000 on the special Mother’s Day National Bingo Game at the Mecca Club in Talbot Road.

“I was in total shock and couldn’t stop shaking and had to ask a friend to come over and sit with me,” said the winner, who has asked not to be named. “I usually play two afternoons a week, and although I decided to go that night because it was the big game, I never ever dreamt I would actually win it!”

A very active and independent lady normally, the winner had an accident while on holiday in Singapore two years ago and has had to wear a calliper and use a wheelchair ever since. “I slipped on the tiles after getting out of the shower and broke my leg very badly. I am having an operation to re-pin it next month, including a knee replacement, which I am praying will mean I can walk again,” she said.

“I can drive myself in my automatic car to the Mecca and then the staff there, who are so helpful, fetch me a wheelchair and take me to a table. On Sunday I changed my routine and sat at a different table, one where I had won £150 before. It must have worked!”

A bingo player for four years, she said she hadn’t had a win for some weeks. She won the National Game prize of £500,000, plus a further Regional prize of £2,119 and the club prize of £289, having completed a ‘full house’ in 39 numbers, the fewest anywhere nationwide.

The winner, who has a 54-year-old son, said she would also use some of the money to repay the kindness of family, friends and neighbours. “I don’t know what I would have done without them since the accident,” she said, “even though I have carers come in as well. I also have a friend who needs a stair lift and I will buy one for her.”

The woman said her husband, who sadly died seven years ago, had started a local company which her son now runs.

Britain’s biggest bingo winner ever
Sheffield mum scoops £953,000!

A 39-year-old Sheffield woman is practically a millionaire tonight (Sunday) after becoming Britain’s biggest bingo winner ever. On only the eighth occasion she has ever played the game, Paula Young, who works in a car factory, scooped the massive jackpot at her local Gala Club.

“I wasn’t going to play tonight because I hadn’t the money but my sister Ann, wanted me to go and my boyfriend, Steve gave me £12.50 towards the tickets,” said Paula, who has two sons, Matthew(14) and eleven year old Gareth. “I was right happy with my life before but now I won’t have to struggle for money. I will keep on working but I won’t have to do overtime anymore.”

Chief Executive of the National Bingo Game Association, Paul Talboys said: “We didn’t quite reach the magic million, but it was close, and the Game tonight still made for thrilling bingo! Judging from the atmosphere in the clubs, bingo players are more than ready for another Big Game."

The National Bingo Game is played every night of the year except Christmas Day, with two games on a Saturday. Since it began in June 1986, £717 million has been paid out to lucky winners. The total weekly payout is now more than £1m. The top prize most evenings is up to £100,000, plus Regional prizes of several thousand pounds for a 40p bingo ticket. The money raised for Macmillan will provide as many as 1,500 patient grants for cancer patients and their families right across the UK.

The prize fund money was all given away to lucky winners playing The National.

The two most popular days in the year for playing The National Bingo Game were Sunday 25 March and Sunday 23 December, when on each occasion over 830,000 tickets were sold.

Chief Executive, Paul Talboys said:

“The continued and increasing success of National Bingo means that the prize money just keeps getting bigger. Which means the excitement just keeps getting better.”

“When you are playing for £100,000 or more at a time, it is difficult not to get excited. Research we carried out last year proved scientifically, that bingo is the ultimate thrill, making the National, the ultimate Bingo game.”

“We are looking forward to making many more bingo players National winners during 2002. The great atmosphere and facilities in many clubs mean that even if you don’t win, it can be a great night out.”

As of 17 January 2002 the National Bingo Game has already paid out £2,144,797 in prize money.

IT’S OFFICIAL:
WOMEN SAVE THE MONEY, MEN SPEND IT!

According to a new nationwide survey* commissioned by the National Bingo Game Association a week in advance of the UK’s biggest ever jackpot of up to £1/2million, being played on Sunday 23rd December, when it comes to winning large sums of money, men and women have very different ideas of how it should be spent!

As a nation of dreamers, a mere 4% of those polled were confident they wouldn’t change a thing if they were the lucky winner.

Confirming perhaps what both sexes have always suspected, the research suggests that men live up to their stereotype and tend towards more frivolous expenditures – accounting for 58% of those who said they’d splash out on a new car and over half of those who’d spend it on the best festive party to end all parties. 60% of women, meanwhile, would rather invest the money for the future while 53% would use it to pay off the mortgage.

But the vanity of the fairer sex came through nonetheless, accounting for 91% of those who admitted that they would have some form of cosmetic surgery.

Not all women, however, wanted simply to invest for the future - 61% said they’d put their winnings towards travelling round the world.

However, the maternal instinct clearly shone through with women proving more generous with their prize money. Indeed, 64% of those who said they’d give the money to charity were women as were the 61% who would opt to share it out amongst family and friends.

As if to prove our continental neighbours with their “insular Britain” theories wrong once and for all, travel proved by far the most popular dream for 65% of the nation. Interestingly, 65% of these were married compared to 19% of singletons who would like to see more of the world. Furthermore, a whopping 89% of those who said they’d spend their half a million navigating the world in a hot air balloon were married as were the 64% who would opt instead for a small island in the sun – of which a staggering 92% were men!

Whilst this may suggest that couples have more glamorous ideas of what they would do with their money, evidence arose to suggest that marriage may stifle creativity as only 21% of the happily married would choose to make a movie, contrasting strongly with the 68% of single folk who apparently harbour a deep-rooted desire to be the next Spielberg.

And as a final word of warning, men should perhaps take note that 69% of those who said they would make their divorce wish come true were… their wives!

Psychologist Dr David Lewis who analysed the survey findings on behalf of the NGBA commented, ‘'The way we choose to spend £500,000 shows that we feel an overwhelming need to reward ourselves for living in a high pressure, stressed out, society by looking good to others and feeling good about ourselves.

‘As the survey shows a windfall of this amount is seen as a passport to pampering. The means of making our dreams come true by paying for expensive toys or luxurious services.

‘ But, interestingly, while £500,000 would make most people extremely happy – with just four percent claiming such wealth would make no difference to their lives – even more money could bring misery rather than greater joy.

‘Half a million is a manageable amount that people know they could easily cope with, while millions can produce severe financial shell shock.

‘People know that such a vast fortune will utterly transform their lives. Not only will they almost certainly be forced to move away from a house or area they love, they’ll also have to engage a small army of financial advisors, cope with family feuds as well as floods of heart breaking begging letters.”
